  • Custom Designed Website Template vs Pre-designed Template

“Why should we spend more money on a custom designed website when we can get a pre-designed template and save time & money?”

If I had a pound for each time I got asked this question I would be sitting on the beach somewhere sipping on some exotic cocktail. But I am not, instead I am trying to gather my thoughts so that I can share my views on this topic.

If you are thinking of getting a new website then the first thing you would want to consider is how much is a good website going to cost?  Websites can cost from a few hundred pounds to thousands of pounds depending on its functionalities.  But is it really necessary to spend thousands of pounds on a custom design when there are so many websites selling pre-designed templates?  For a small fee they will even set it up for you!

See, there lies the first issue, let me explain, these websites will sell the same template to anybody willing to buy and therefore losing its unique appeal.  There could be several businesses out there using the same template.  Apart from this, pre-designed templates offer limited customisation or may have several built-in functionalities you might not use and ultimately may weigh your website down.  In most cases, you will have to stay within the boundaries set by the template author and configure only a few simple features such as colours, fonts and images.

The other biggest disadvantage is, if the template author decides to stop providing support or updates and you encounter an issue you will need to hire a professional to sort it out which could be costly.

It’s not all bad news though, the biggest advantage of a pre-designed template is that it can be setup in no time and with very little investment.  Sometimes a pre-designed template can offer just enough functionalities to get you started while you consider your options to spend serious money on getting a bespoke website made to meet your exact needs.

Whilst a custom designed website can cost more it gives you full control over every aspect of the process.  You, together with your designer, can create a unique brand and bring your vision to life.  Beyond an up-front cost to design & develop the website, the ongoing costs can be minimal. There is no better money spent today than on internet advertising. Consider that you have a full color advertisement working for you 24 hours a day all over the world. No other advertising medium can compete with it!
